Kalisi has been transferred from the small island of Eua to the main island of Tonga' tapu. He is currently the district leader in his area. This means he helps support and guide other missionaries and the work in that particular part of the island.

What it do cuzzies?
We do a lot of walking in my new area and it's pretty good cause I can stand to lose some kgs.
There have been some rule changes, one, for example, is that we're going back to wearing sandals...too bad I gave mine away at the beginning of my mission. haha

Being district leader is a new experience. It's kind of like raising a puppy. You have to take care of that little puppy, even in the middle of the night, not because you have to, but because you want to see that little puppy grow.

It's crazy how the time just floats on past and you're like, whoa, aye, almost done! I'm on my last 6 months. I feel bad for my momz though, and the rest of the fam. My grandma was saying it feels like I've been gone forever. What's short for me seems long for the fam. This week has been extra special because we were able to baptize 3 people, teaching makes the time fly. I am loving life here.

I just want to say if you're reading this on the blog, whoever you are, think about the first person that pops into your head, you should get a hold of them and do something Christ-like for them. Your out of the blue service will let them know you care and because of your willingness to serve, the Lord will open up the windows of heaven.
That, I testify to you in the most humble way I can.

Love you guys!

So this week we just did proseyliting.

Conference was amazing though I loved all the talks. What I got out of conference was to make Christ central in your life and do all that is necessary to do so. Reading scriptures, fulfilling your calling brings blessings and partaking of the sacrament helps us have Christ with us always.

Hope everyone is doing fine. Keep praying for those you love and don't be afraid to lend a helping hand to those who need it even though they might not look like they want it.

My love goes out to all my family and friends who have been blessed with safety from the outside world and the terrible things that have happened.

October 17th 2017

Aye hows it!
Hope everything is alright back at home...
I am grateful for all the love from you guys and I love you all equally as much.

As far as the mission goes, I have a new companion and I am still here in Eua but all goods cuz its pretty lata (chill, nice) here. I am training someone and he should be coming in tomorrow. Hopefully, the Lord will help guide me as I do my best to set an example for the person I am training!

There is a baptism this week or next..., not ours but someone's in our district. I am glad to see the work is still progressing other places even though it hasn't been as fruitful for us in our area.

Anyway, that's all the news I have for you all at this time... if you feel like it, inbox me, if not all goods. Just would like to hear from yalls if you can.

I just wanna leave you guys with a quick like thing. One thing I wish I would have done back at home more often and maybe this is just me, but I found solace in reading the general conference talks after conference. In the moment of watching them, you feel such a strong spirit and testimony of truth radiating from the words they say, and I thought why can't I always feel this truth outside of conference time?
So if you are ever in need of encouragement, feel spiritually hungry, or you feel just kinda like you're existing and not living, read a talk! you know?

Preparing to baptize a beautiful family

Kou fie tuku hoku fkmalo ki he Otua a etau tamai i he langi ki he ng mea naa Ne ai kitae au pea hoku famili foki

Fank you for all da tings.... haha jokes, I'm not that fob lol (not yet ;) )
I am so thankful for this opportunity I have to write to yall today. This will be shortish but a little something aye?

This week has been really great in terms of work!! As some of you may know we have had the opportunity to teach a family and also another girl named Na'a.
Although na'e faingata'a ke ako'i ka Na'a, we have made some really nice progress with the family and honestly, this is one of my most favourite families I have ever met. They are very anga-lelei, very kind, and really funny. They have this little daughter, dude, I am telling you the freaking funniest girl you will ever meet in your entire life - hahaha.
Anyway, it's this father with four girls and the mom is already a member but the kids he had with another wife... but anyway, they were super into the lessons and taking everything in... SO, in the morning on one of the days, a car pulls up and it was our...fkfeohi...fellow-shipper (a man from the ward that will help teach and help the family be comfortable in the congregation). He pulls up in his rickety old car and is like, "so Mafi done with all the lessons?" I tell him,  "yes sir we are!" "He's like ight lets get these sweet souls baptized!"
Four days later and after a lot of hard work and a few complications we baptized them. It was so great to see them come out of the water and to see them beaming with a bright new countenance!
We are working with them and things are progressing ultimately the Lord is really the only one that moves this work forward.
Ofa lahi atu ka moutolu

Thank you all for writing me and being here for me.

Love you all,
Elder Mafi

Elder Mafi stays in Eua for another month!

Elder Mafi with other Elders on the little island of Eua where he's serving right now.
(I love how they're all wearing sweatshirts and coats...it's probably 70/75 degrees! haha. Brrr!)

What it do fam?

I'm so thankful for this opportunity I have here to write to ya'll.
I just want to say thank you all for the emails ya'll have sent to me and the countless letters that you mail to me as well. I know it's a sacrifice to do things for others so thank you all so very much. It's hard to convey my true appreciation through this email here but thank you all.

As far as updates go, we are still teaching this family of five and another girl. All the lessons have been completed and now we are just going back over the lessons a second time trying to find things that need re-explaining and what not... they are participating in the lessons however which is good news for us because participation means there is interest in getting baptized... so I'm crossing my fingers and knocking on wood...or a coconut tree harharhar - Palangi (American) joke.

Anyway, that's about it. We have set up a date for October so I hope and I pray that some day there will be a vision of eternal happiness for them.

But other than that...pretty much it!

It's getting pretty warm here and a bit stormy but not as bad as I heard America is right now... looks like America has some repenting to do!  Haha! Jokes - Jokes!

Hope yalls are safe tho.

Love you all and keep those who are in danger in your prayers. Love, Elder Mafi
Down time at the MQ (apartment) working on those UNO skills.

I thought I'd share a few uplifting things that Kalisi has shared in his personal emails to me over the last couple of months:

Me: Any experiences to share?

Elder Mafi: No outstanding experiences. But there is a guy we're teaching who got deported back to Tonga. he was a gang member but since then he's straightened up and has a family, but he is a drinker and he desires to stop because of his two little girls. he wants to stop to set the example and be a better father. This really hit me and it made think like you know? There is good in the hearts of men. People do want to change. There are always points in peoples lives to change. You know the Spirit always whispers in people's ears at some point and it's our jobs as members of the church to be there to answer their plea to change.
Acting on every prompting you're given.

Me: What have you learned from being a missionary for a year so-far?

Elder Mafi:
I love my mission...the work is good and it was meant for me, to stand up and learn integrity. To be obedient even though people aren't watching...I've been learning a lot and adapting.

Singing at Zone Conference

Thanks to our friends in the mission field, The Kapps we get to see Elder Mafi sing at his latest zone conference. His companion is Elder Teh (the one with glasses), he's from Malaysia and is at the end of his mission. He and Elder Mafi have been having great fun teaching the gospel on the little island of Eua.
 Here's his last email:
"...I'm so thankful for my comp and my area, I'm so thankful for the Lord especially, He has prepared so many people for us to teach. We had 8 teachings in the last week and had 10 visitors come to church. So we have been really busy, I am so thankful. There are many times on a mission where you have nothing to do but you go out anyway, so I am thankful that I actually have things to do instead of going out just to knock doors and stuff.
I hope you all are doing good. Thank you for the letters and the notes and everything and for writing me. I love all of you and thank you for your love and support of me.

On to the island of EUA

Kalisi has been a man of few words these past couple of weeks but he has some dear friends that served close to him when he was on Tongatapu. Elder and Sister Kapp! They have become like our family, friends too! He is teaching and implementing technology and she is the mission nurse, great combo of skills.

Below is a letter to us from Elder Kapp about Elder Mafi, and bless them for sending pictures!

We are so, so happy he is with someone who wants to work and is upbeat, for we know this has been Kalisi's wish.
They are on a small Island called Eua. Its population is about 5,000. Kalisi said they cover their area in about 3 hours, on the look out for the pure in heart. He has faith that they will find someone ready to hear the gospel.

I’m sure you have heard about the last transfer.  When we heard that Elder Mafi would have Elder Teh as a companion we were so happy for both of them.  Elder has been serving in the office for about 6 months and I he wanted a good companion to finish up his mission with.  The Mission President asked him and I think he specifically requested Elder Mafi.  Elder Teh is from Malaysia but speaks perfect English and is such an upbeat young man.  Elder Teh is on his last transfer but is a wonderful person and missionary.   I think these two are tearing it up in ‘Eua.

We saw Elder Mafi on Saturday prior to the Elder Groberg devotional and he was so happy (we had to snap a couple of photos).  It was great to see that Mafi "smile again”.   We knew they were coming so we went looking for them to say hi and get our hug.  Even though he is not far away, we miss Elder Mafi and were happy to be able to see him again.  You have a really good son who is doing GREAT things here with his companions and with the people of Tonga.

Ofa lahi ‘atu!

Elder Mafi - Thoughts On Mothers

Aye fam hows it been?
I have been with my new comp for a week and we are putting in good work and we have two investigators we are teaching tonight. We are also working really hard to bring back the less actives. The vineyard is purple and ready to be squeezed hahaha. Those grapes won't squeeze themselves.
A missionary couple named the Kapps challenged me to get a baptism here in this area so we are working our hardest to fulfill that challenge.
I just wanted to share a small little message with you all. Since this month is mothers day, I have been thinking a lot about my own mother and the mothers in the scriptures. I often come to think of the Son's of Helaman and the amazing strength and courage they had to fight and emerge victorious throughout their battles. But how did they gain their strength? How did they have so much protection that not a single one of them died in battle? It was because of their mothers that taught them in the ways of the Lord and because they remembered the things of which they taught them.
I know that families are ordained of God and special in so much that they help us to carry on when life gets hard. I know that mothers are a very very important part and for me the most important part to families. My mother and my sister are not only my family but also some of my closest friends and I respect and I love them both. I love my grandma Ila and grandma Finau. I love all my aunties too.
Show respect to and love women always. Always express your love and care for the women that are close to you for they are daughters of our God.
Ofa lahi atu ka moutolu. I hope you all have a great week.

April 5th 2017

Hi, everyone! How are you all doing?? First of all, I apologize for not sending a group email over the past few times. I haven't gotten to use the internet for a while because of... issues (ie the bishop couldn't find the key to the office lol)  BUT I AM HERE NOW!

Ima be honest this past week has been one of the hardest weeks of my mission. Mostly spiritually. If I were to rate it on a scale from 1-10, I'd say a -8. Negative. Eight. No bueno. Things just haven't been going to plan and a few of the days we hardly got a teaching.
However, I am not here to complain. Cuz that's lame. What I wanted to share with all of you this day is something that I realized. And it is something I hope some of you can turn to when you need it.

To whoever is reading this and is feeling like they're too tired to carry on, too fed up to go forward or too hurt to push along, I ask of you to please, please, don't give up. Don't give up on striving to be perfect. Don't give up on someone or something if it becomes too difficult. Don't give up on trying your best every day. Please don't give up. When the winds blow too hard when the snow becomes too deep and you feel like you cannot carry on, call upon the Lord and ask for strength. I testify to you that the Lord will lift you up and He will help you pull your hand cart. All He asks is that you not give up. Please, do not give up. Life is gonna throw lemons at you, but what do you do? You open up a store that sells Roasted Lemon Chicken or Lemon shrimp pasta and for dessert Lemon Meringue Cake, frozen lemon pie, or lemon cheesecake to name a few.
But what happens when you get too many lemons? You call another Chef aka the Lord to help you.

I know that the Lord loves each and everyone one of you. I hope the spirit is able to be with me and testify to you the truth and the sincerity that I am trying to convey to you all. Please do not give up on yourself or others or things when they get too hard.

I love you all and if there is anything you need from me please let me know.

April 23rd 2017

How are you all doing? I want to tell all of you that I love all you guys so much for those who are at home reading my emails and whatnot I love you guys and all the support you give me and my family. Thank you all so much. I know that the Lord is always in our lives blessing us and regardless of if we see it or not I know He always got our backs.

This week I spent almost all of it in the hospital because my comp had a virus, thankfully he is alive now.

Just a real quick little spiritual thought (cuz aye you know, I'm a missionary hahaha)

Storytime. On one occasion I went on a hike/walk thing (cuz it was a pretty flat walk hahaha)
anyway, at the beginning of the trail there is this long tunnel in this mountain and it goes on for two miles? and at the end, you can see a little light. And the light that poured in from that little dot in what seemed just open space, never grew wider until I was right there in the opening of the tunnel. All the time you hear the phrase "there is always a light at the end of a tunnel" you know? But what we sometimes forget that you will have to walk a long time. Like you still may not be able to see where you're going even when you're half way there. Or even yards from the end. The path may still be dark in front of you.
As I was walking, however, I knew the direction I was going was right because I was facing the light. And by facing the light and taking the right steps it got me to the end.
In life when we feel lost or feel like we are walking in the darkness, we may need to stop and turn around and face the light, we need to face towards the gospel. And as we take those right steps and progress forward towards the light, towards our Savior Jesus Christ not only will we come to know Him better, but we will meet Him.

Enjoying the work in Holonga

February 26th

Elder Mafi loads up his plate after a morning of service in preparation for the Queen of Tonga's funeral (she passed away at 90 years of age). All of the local missionaries and members of the LDS church cleaned the palace grounds, streets and surrounding areas in support of the funeral. He and a handful of Elders got to go inside the palace to deliver tapa cloth to honor the queen and her family.

Malo e lelei Famili

I want to first apologize. I haven't been sending good or any emails as of late and I will try from now on to have at least, you know a little "sumtin sumtin" haha.

This week has been great tho.
This entire week we couldn't focus on anything but our investigator we have. His name is Vekita and he used to be a part of a gang but now he's looking to change his life around and stop smoking and what not. I can just see the light in him and how much he wants to change. When ever we're out walking or proselyting we are always coming up with ways we can help him see and gain an understanding of Christ and his atonement.
On top of that we now have two new families we are going to teach as well as 11 other refferrals to less actives AND I AM SO PUMPED TO HELP CONVERT THEM ALL! hahaha

This week we also had the oppritunity to do a lot of service. We saw some guy weeding his farmland so we went to a memebers house and grabbed some hoes and started helping him and helped him all day. He is 7th day adventest but he was baptized in the church so hopefully he gets back to going??  We also had the opportunity to do service at the palace and we had to wear a black ribbon around our arms to show respect and then we also, today, got to sweep the streets of Tonga and let me tell ya its like not even leaves it's just a bunch of dirt, haha But it was a great opportunity nonetheless!

That is about it for this week! I am super excited for this coming week and to have my testimony grow. I am so thankful for the opportunity I have to work and serve here in Tonga. It is a blessing I often overlook. Thank you to all my family for loving me even miles away and helping me and guiding me. I am thankful for the spirit and the atonement of Jesus Christ for blessing me in times of need and for making up for and helping me recognize my shortcomings. I know that through the spirit and unwavering faith all things are possible. The Lord blesses us each and every day in ways we may not recognize but he is always there for us and he will send angels to hold us up in times of need, all we have to do is ask.

Fefe moutolu?
Oku ou sai aupito
Ko e ngaue e fakalakalaka auptio i heni

The Lord has really been with me this week. Lookin out for me and it's been so awesome having Him on my side.
We got three baptisms this week and the guy we have been working on has decided to go without smoking and so far he's been doing 100 and he will be baptized this coming week.
Another thing that happened this week.
Probably the biggest.
So in Tonga people's emotions are pretty like well hidden. Most of the time they don't show anything, right?
On Thursday we went to this couple's house for breakfast and we saw her filling up her water bottle outside and she said something to us but we didn't hear so we just went up to the house and waited for her to give us some money for breakfast or to tell us to come eat with them.
Anyway she handed us some money for food and then she started to talk to us about how she was and how her life is...she began to tell us about how good she is and everything but I'm like just there listening but I'm thinking like man she just has this wall up right now and she's not telling us what she is actually feeling.
So I asked some questions and all of a sudden she just opened up to us and started to cry and said how hard it is to be married to a Mormon while her dad is a pastor and how she always gets a bunch of crap from her dad and how she used to be the favorite child but now she has been more or less disowned. She also told us how her only son who is like 7 months gets treated like nothing by her family because she is married to a Mormon and the dad tells her he's gonna grow up a criminal. Then on top of that she has some struggles at home and like she feels like crying all the time and she started to cry and I started to tear up and I just wanted to give her a hug until she felt better. Anyway, Before she didn't really want to have us around but now that she opened up to us she trusts us and now she feels better about the church and will start to come more often.

Anyway, that was the biggest thing that happened this week. It felt good to be able to get someone to open up and express how they feel and we not having to say anything. It was great. Now she said she'd come to church more often and aw man it "wuz suh kuul."

I love you all - hope your week is as cool as Antarctica - harharhar!

No, but seriously I love you all and you mean a lot to me and I am so glad you all support me all the way out here and even to those that aren't on this email chain. Thank you all for sending me letters and little awesome things to help encourage me.

New Area New Comp New Island!

What a week it's been.
It's nice to be in a new area. I love my comp as well. He has just as much motivation to go out and work as I do so we will learn a lot this transfer and hopefully, do all the Lord asks of us to do.
Some of you may heard already but they changed some of the schedule for the mission like when we start proselyting and when we do other stuff and it's basically to give us more agency and keep us healthier is what they said.

Been reading a lot of Christs teachings a lot and it's really cool to go back and read it because honestly only really heard it in seminary and then just like quotes here and there, but I felt prompted to go back and study the attitudes and actions and attributes of Christ because aye, if there's one person I wanna be like its Jesus haha.

We have a baptism scheduled and we have a referral! Putting in dat wuuuuuuuuuurk!!!!!!

JANUARY 15th 2017

Whats up fam!

Thank you all so so much for your emails and letters you have sent me. I love to hear about all what you all are doing and it's nice to know someone cares at the other end of the line haha.
So thank yall guys (good English right? haha (my English is getting really fob now so forgive me haha))
This week hasn't been the greatest of weeks to be real. No teachings or anything, BUT I invited this group of girls to come to church and two of the four did SO THATS GREAT! Hopefully I get the chance to teach them this coming week!

ALSO I've found some people that know English so they will be able to help with my tongan which is doooooope.
I was trying to figure out what I was going to write this week but I didn't know what to say cuz nothing really interesting happened so I thought maybe this time I'd share just like a thought.
Cool? Cool. haha

One thing I want to share first is just like a quick little thought and it is, listen to what the Spirit tells you on your highs, so you know what to do on your lows. Meaning to not discredit what you felt or what the Spirit told you as something inapplicable when life gets hard. And more of like listen to and remember always what the spirit tells you because the Lord knows you better than anyone else. You know?

Ok.
Next thing.

So I was thinking about goals and like things I want to accomplish or do, you know?
And a story/experience came to mind.
I was on a hike along the coast this one time and it had been three days into the five-day trip and you know I was real tired from waking up early haha but anyway as we descended from a hill, we stepped right into this bank of fog. The beach was completely shrouded in this thick pea soup of fog. It's like the kind of fog where as you look forward you see nothing and it feels like it expands on forever. As I stared into this wall of fog I kinda felt a little weak almost and intimidated by how immense it was. Never the less I took a step into the abyss. My goal was to get to camp before it got too late and I wanted to get there as soon as possible ( mostly because I was hungry haha). It almost seemed like the further I walked, the less I could see in front of me. Still, I walked and walked and walked and walked, not knowing what to expect and even at times doubting the direction I was walking was correct. But forward I trudged. I had a goal to get to the camp-site and I was going to move forward till I got there. Finally, after years of walking, we all made it to the place. Looking back on this experience it showed me what a good trait to have should be. That is, to not shy away from a goal that you make. Although walking through the fog felt like I was stuck in a never ending loop and even at times feeling like I should turn back, I pushed forward with my pack tightly strapped to my back, determined to accomplish what I had set out to do.
If you believe you can do or accomplish something then try the best you can to get there. As long as the goal is logical and well thought out it can be achievable. When it gets hard, remember that because you planned it out and it seemed logical to you it's still achievable. The fog will come. It will make things hard to see. But in the time you want to give up, when all seems lost, when the fog becomes too thick, you must continue on and have faith in yourself. Because if you give up, you'll never know if the next step you would have taken would have gotten you through the fog and maybe would have brought you right to the feet of your goal.

I want to close with some words from President Eyring about having faith and apply it to making and accomplishing goals.
He said, "If the foundation of faith is not embedded in our hearts, the power to endure will crumble...(in the words of Moroni)...acting on even a twig of faith, allows God to grow it...If we have faith in Jesus Christ, we never need feel we are alone or unloved in the Lord's service because we never are. We can feel the love of God. The savior has promised angels on our left and our right to bear us up and he always keeps his word. His love is unfailing."
The last words really stuck out to me. How he will send us angels on our left and right to bear us up. I know I'm just a kid, serving a mission, but I know what I speak is true. I believe that if we make goals or want to accomplish something hard, we can and are able to do it with our determination coupled with the help of the Lord and with those two things hand in hand you will have the potential to move mountains, for we are promised we are able to do all things through the Lord.

So that's my thing for this week!
Hope you all are doing great in America...with your warm showers and your soft couches hahaha jkjk
Always good to hear from you all tho so email when you can. Ofa Lahi Atu!

Malo e lelei
Fefe hake?
Oku ou feifia he oku pday ahoni haha
This week's email will be short, kataki haha.
So this week hasn't been great like the week before, investigator wise, but I've done a lot of learning and what not. Anyway, I've been thinking about like lying and lying to yourself.
So when I was back at home I watched this video about lies, and in it, it said we hear from 10 to 200 lies a day and the person we lie to the most is ourselves to create a better image of who we are.
So then i thought, "but what if we want to be better at something?" you know? Say I want to be more patient right? Sometimes we tell ourselves we are something until we cloak and become it. Know what I mean? I can lie to myself and tell myself I'm patient and that would make me seem patient, but really we're not because we are lying to ourselves that we are. You know? If the Lord wants us to be better, then what do we say to ourselves without lying?
I think that we should say we are working on something. Say I'm working on being patient and stuff like that. That way you're not lying to yourself and you're improving becasue it's still on your mind. you know?
So yeah, hope that makes sense.

Here are some random things that happened this week:

Zone conference

Food poisoning

New missionary rules (yay)
We got invited to a party with a bunch of drunk people. It was really awkward but they started singing and I acted like I knew the words and sang with them hahaha

There was a pig that layed down by us so I scratched his belly with my slipper
(o.k. as his mom, I just have to say, this is sooo Kalisi, haha).

I made up two games. One called match-ketball and slap cap. For match-ketball you have a bowl of water and matches and you light the match and as fast as you can, throw it in the bowl and see if you can get it in. And for slap cap you have bottles lined up and you flick a cap at them and try to knock down the bottles.
So yeah, that's it hahaha
Just tryna make fun haha
Anyway, Ofa atu!
Thank you for you love and support and emails!

In my studies this week I watched this video about Jesus walking on water and it's called, "Wherefore Didst Thou Doubt." In the video, Peter sees Christ on the water and Peter is like, "Bid me come unto you" and Christ says, "come." And so he starts to walk and as he is walking he's focused on Christ but as the storm around him rages and the winds are blowing he breaks sight of Christ and starts to sink and he says "Lord save me!" So Christ comes over and lifts him up and as he's getting into the boat he says. "Oh ye of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" This whole story made me think of a question and it was, where is my doubt that prevents me from walking out on the water (in a sense) where are my doubts, you know? I want to walk on the water and walk to Christ and do amazing things like that, where are my doubts?
And so that's what I've been thinking about this week. Is where are my doubts and do I have faith enough to walk on the water?
Maybe this might help some of you, where are your doubts that hold you back from doing extrodinary things? I mean I don't mean to be all preachy,  just kinda think about it, ya?

Thats one of the main things I've been thinking about. I've been studying hope love and charity a lot but I'll save that for another time maybe haha.
